One of the five best films that I have ever seen. Absolutely stunning and flawless in every possible way. Some of the finest actors in the business help to create a film that is truly part of the golden age of Italian cinema.Every frame of film is like watching a Renoir painting.Bertolucci has given us a 5 1/4 hour masterpiece so hauntingly beautiful that one cannot take one's eyes off the screen from the incredible opening until the very last frame. The music is also one of the very best film scores writtten for the screen.The film was cut to 4 hours for its International cinema and original dvd release.The later dvd release was uncut. Watch out for a very young Gerald Depardieu and Robert De Nero being masterbated by a prostitute.Very daring for it's time as nothing was left to the imagination.Burt Lancaster also got criticised at the time for another very controversial scene in the film. Let us hope that the bluray release is as stunning to look at as was the film when released in 1977.No film before 1900 has ever been so brilliantly photographed. An unforgettable masterpice that is long overdue on bluray.
